First Dance Songs Your Friends Probably Won’t Pick First
August 26, 2008
We’ve mentioned first dance song options here a few times, but haven’t so much gone through the motions. Unlike your Grand Entrance Song, which most people choose to show some creativity with and have a litle fun around, the first dance is one that most likely, people are going to pay attention to the lyrics to the song. This summer, a lot of people were talking about a playlist of top first dance songs from discjockeys.com, but let’s open it up a little bit further than that, perhaps…
One song I’m hearing a lot of right now is Jason Mraz’ “I’m Yours,” which has been making a move this year when it comes to people’s dance choices. It’s a little bit faster than some might be used to, but it’s definitely modern and shouldn’t make you feel like you’re picking something that you might have seen picked at a wedding 10 years ago.
Also making the list of modern, and not something all your friends might have chosen is Rivers Cuomo’s “I Was Made For You,” which I’ll bank that your mom or dad will give you a look about, but it’s a pretty awesome song. [via]
Jack Johnson’s “Better Together” is another option that ups the tempo a little bit and makes perfect sense, no?
Okay, okay so it’s another Jason Mraz song, but it’s a really good one, too. Check out “Lucky,” where Mraz and Colbie Caillat do a great duet.
Last, but not least, you have to check out The Fray’s “Look After You,” which any of you who watched NBC’s “Journeyman” might recognize…
Now there’s five songs for you that you probably won’t catch at anyone else’s wedding.
Lacking on the romance tip?
August 25, 2008
Lacking on the romance tip? Well, AreYouRomantic.com might just have a solution to get you out of the doghouse. Or maybe a little bit more into the good graces of the friends of your significant other, who are probably hearing the complaints of “he never takes me to xyz” or whatever. Just a thought.

Get your grape stomp on
August 14, 2008
Looking for something random, possibly romantic, and at least amusing to do with your special someone? Well, perhaps this is an idea if you’re up for a weekend trip. The AP Irvington Stomp where you and yours can get your grape stomp on at the White Fences Vineyard in Irvington, VA. It’s Labor Day weekend at all, might be a nice change of pace, if you’re into trying something new on. Like new socks.
I just can’t help the water sprinkler.
August 14, 2008
I know, I know, you’re probably sick of it already, but I might as well make a damn category for people I’m finding doing the “water sprinkler” at their wedding.
Check out this featured dance, which is pretty darn interactive between the bride and groom. Sometimes one or the other “leads” and does their thing while the other one hangs out and just looks generally uncomfortable. Not here… Water sprinkler at 0:22, btw.
Uncle Luke & marriage
August 13, 2008
Sorry for being out of pocket for a few days, Groomify readers - had some craziness in the last week (including getting a great photographer for our wedding - more on that later!), but we’re back in action…
Last week, I caught this item by John Sellers in Time Out New York about Luther Campbell - who some of you might know as Uncle Luke, among other names - getting engaged, and wanted to pass it along, as it’s definitely a pretty cool piece, and I know had gotten a few of my friends buzzing. Campbell, at least to me, is one of the main names I remember from being into rap and hip-hop during high school, in the early 90’s. I remember snagging my copy of 2 Live Crew’s “Banned in the USA” from a friend who worked in a local record store, and spending entirely too much time banging that, among other Crew jams, in a few of my friends’ rides on the way to and from school, and those were the days. In any case, a lot of people have made a big thing about Campbell getting engaged, and aside from the TONY piece, you’ve gotta check out AllHipHop’s video on the subject, with Campbell himself.
Five second rule applied to wedding cakes
August 5, 2008
Check out this example of the “five second rule,” as applied to wedding cakes. You know, the rule where you pick food up off the floor if it hasn’t been there for five seconds (okay, probably 10), and eat it anyway? Well, howabout applying it to your wedding cake top?
I’m a pretty typical five second rule follower, but Judith’s mention of it being not-so-bright on Monday morning might change my mind. Oh, okay, probably not.
Obnoxious pranks you shouldn’t do
August 4, 2008
Throwing this out there is probably something I shouldn’t do, because I’m sure one of my obnoxious friends will attempt to pull such a stunt on me, but I’m taking that risk anyway. The other day, I had been reading something about silly things that people did at their friends’ weddings, such as really demented speeches or doing other inappropriate things, and this really random thing showed up in my head…
What would happen if someone got the DJ to play Atlantic Starr’s “Secret Lovers” and then tried to get a dance with the bride or groom? Has anyone pulled this stunt, and did it work? This I would most certainly love to hear.
Revenge and eBay
August 1, 2008
Just caught this story from CBS3 in Philly about a man who is selling his soon-to-be-former wife’s wedding dress on eBay because said wife cheated on him shortly after getting gastric bypass surgery. It appears to be a pretty harsh situation involving credit card debt, lawyer bills, and so on.

Because moms need to have fun, too
July 28, 2008
Okay, the embedding was disabled on this fantastic YouTube posting, so you’ll have to click through, but check out what happens when the mother of the groom and the mother of the bride decide to have an air guitar duel to Billy Idol’s “Mony Mony.” You probably won’t be disappointed.
Yep, it’s a dance-off
July 28, 2008
Check out this dance-off from a recent wedding whose video I caught on YouTube this weekend.
You’ll note my favorite part of all of these dances, the water sprinkler, at about 1:45.

- Check out this extra awesome AT-AT cake from a Star Wars-themed wedding that Offbeat Bride mentioned while discussing the photographer, Justin Winokur. You can check out his Flickr feed here.
- A great shot including some awesome clouds, from Chicagoland, surprisingly. [kateandersok]
- Re-setting the bar for bachelor party craziness is this shot, where some dudes apparently have gotten at least one of them onto a tank for a bachelor party. What’s up with that. I want it. [samihonkonen]
- Waterskiing can be fun. Or maybe not. [ltjbukem]
- Apparently, your bachelor party is not welcome at this NYC establishment. [litherland]
- This gives new meaning to the phrase “Rocky Mountain High,” now doesn’t it.
Bridal Boxing: A New Sport?
July 27, 2008
By now most of us are familiar with the concept of “trashing the dress,” where the newly married couple go out and take some (typically) awesome photos in the ocean, laying on the ground somewhere that might stain their clothes, or doing really fun things. That was all well and good, but it’s got nothing on the videos I’m including here, I must say.
This is the first time I’ve ever seen a bride and groom duke it out with giant, air-filled boxing gloves, while standing in a kiddie pool. There’s three rounds worth…really. Oh, okay. It’s not *really* a bride and groom. But it’s amusing nonetheless.
Round 1
Round 2
Round 3
Did I mention that the pool was full of baby oil?

Here’s a roundup of some great items from around the blogosphere and beyond that are (hopefully) of interest to Groomify readers…
- Gear Patrol points out that you should know more than one way to tie a tie.
- About a week ago, WeddingWire linked to a story about a couple getting married at Waffle House, for reals.
- If you happen to be involved with the whole planning thing, you might want to check out these tips that note some “warning signs” for vendors you and your significant other might be bringing on
- AisleDash’s Wendy Davidson throws out, for your viewing pleasure, the option of flying in via helicopter as your “grand” entrance.
- Also from AisleDash, and this is super helpful if you happen to be the father of the bride, are some tips on what you should be doing that day.
What about the teeth?
July 27, 2008
Seeing this post about a contest over at WeddingBee, where all you’ve got to do to win is drop in and tell ‘em if you’re going to do anything to whiten your teeth for the big day (you have until 9p tonight - Sunday, 7/27, to enter), got me thinking about just that subject.
Given that we are all familiar with the magical things that our photographers can do (heck, you can do it right now - check out Picnik’s Teeth Whiten feature, for instance) to make our teeth look better, among other blemishes, it’s easy to say that we’ll just let things stay the way they are and clean ‘em up afterwards, but it’s not all about the pictures and video, you know. Of course, we all can’t be as hardcore as Patrick Bateman in “American Psycho” when it comes to personal care, but what kinds of smart things are there to do when it comes to brushing up on tooth care?
From what I’ve gathered, just by doing a little bit of digging, you’ve got options like Mentadent’s product set will replace your current toothpaste, and add some specific ingredients targeted at whitening, specifically. A more popular option, and one that I’ve tried myself with results I was happy with, is something like Crest Whitestrips, which you can currently get a $7 off coupon for, and takes about 5 minutes per day. Crest also offers a number of different information bits on their site, including newsletters and more.
Beyond those, there are options such as BriteSmile, along with whitening procedures your dentist would offer or recommend.
IMHO, this is one of those things that people probably push off until it’s really close to their nuptials, rather than figure out a way to work it into their day-to-day. As you’re surely aware, stuff costs more when you have less time to implement it, so the earlier you figure out what you want to do to brighten up your smile, the better. That goes for your wallet, too.
Scotch commentary
July 27, 2008
If you haven’t caught this already, and you’re a guy who’s into some scotch (or maybe you’re not, and would like to be), then check out the latest episode of Wine Library TV, featuring Gary Vaynerchuk (as usual), and WordPress guy Matt Mullenweg, as they check out a few scotch options.
Check out the full post, comments and all, here.
